The History / Blood on the Dance Floor Period, 1995-1999, was of Michael is busiest eras with albums, his largest world tour, a number of the costliest and stunning short films as well as a heavy media schedule.

The short film for Scream was directed by Mark Romanek and had a giant budget of $7 million. It was a futuristic film in black and white with a brilliant dancing, morphing and other special effects. The 6 minute film smashed the record for the Most Expensive Music Video, a record it still holds today. Scream had an AA-side release; Childhood, which had a stunning short film, directed by Nicholas Brandt. The song was also the theme to the film, Free Willy one. The single debuted at number three on the US charts, making it the highest debuting single in the history of the Billboard Chart. The single went to number one in 19 countries.

On June 14th, Michael and Lisa Marie Presley appeared on Prime Time Live in an interview with Diane Sawyer. In the work of the 60-minute interview, Michael discussed his music and career and along with Lisa Marie, revealed details of their marriage. The programmed was watched by 60 million viewers and was the most watched program of 1995.

History broke sales records in its first week on the charts. In the United Kingdom it sold 100,000 copies in days and in Australia the advance order of 130,000 copies was the largest preliminary shipment in Sony Australia is history. Similar sales figures were witnessed all over Europe and in the US, the album went to number one. By the finish of June, History had sold a staggering 7.5 million copies worldwide.
The release of History was also met with controversy, as Michael was accused of anti-Semitism because of the lyrics in the song They Don’t Care about Us. Michael immediately issued an apology and took the album off the shelves. They re-recorded the song and re-released History, funding the cost himself.

The following day, Sony continued its $30 million dollar promotional campaign for History, by floating a immense statue of Michael Jackson down the River Thames in the United Kingdom. There were a total of nine statues throughout Europe. Each statue was ten meters tall, one, 100 kilograms in weight and made from steel and fiberglass. The promotion for History was the largest campaign for a single album at that time.
History- Past, Present and Future, Book one was released worldwide on June 18th, 1995. The disc album was a mix of greatest hits and new material. The first disc; History Begins featured 15 greatest hits from 1979-1991 and the second disc; History Continues featured 15 new tracks.

The album took a year in the studio to generate and Michael showed more independence on History, by producing the album himself, playing several instruments and writing and co-writing 12 of the new tracks: "Scream", "They Don't Care About Us", "Stranger in Moscow", "This Time Around", "Earth Song", "D.S.", "Money", "Childhood "Tabloid Junkie" 2 Bad, "History" and "Little Susie". They recorded covers for the album: Come Together (originally recorded in 1988 for Moonwalker) and Smile by Charlie Chaplin. R. Kelly contributed the ballad You Are Not Alone. They also collaborated with rappers Shaquille O Neill and Infamous B.I.G, singers Boys II Men and guitarist Slash. The album came with a 52-page color booklet with picas, lyrics, artwork by Gottfried Heinlein and details of every award Michael had won up until 1995.

On the 25th of June, Michael attended a press conference in New York, where it was announced that Michael & Janet Jackson had been nominated for a record 11 MTV Video Music Awards for Scream. Michael also announced that they would be performing at a concert for HBO called One Night Only at the finish of the year. They were then interviewed by Bill Bellamy for a special called Michael Jackson Changes History which was televised soon after.

You Are Not Alone, the second single from the album were released on August 15th, 1995. The short film to accompany the song was directed by Wayne Isham and featured Lisa Marie Presley. The single debuted at number one on the US charts, smashing the earlier record set by cream. You Are Not Alone was the first and still only song to ever debut at number on the US Billboard Chart. The single was a worldwide smash, reaching number one in three countries and record sales for History soared.
On the 17th of August, Michael Jackson participated in his first ever net Simulcast. It was the largest ever cyber chat at the time and drew in over 16,000 fans, who asked Michael questions about his music and life.

Michael attended the MTV Video Music Awards on September 7th, where they opened the show with a brilliant performance. Slash joined Michael onstage for the performance which included Black or White, Billie Jean, Dangerous and You Are Not Alone. Michael and Janet won awards for Scream, including Best Dance Video, Best Art Direction and Best Choreography.
Michael graced lots of other awards shows with appearances in 1995, including BETs 10th Anniversary show, where they was inducted in to their Walk of Fame. They also performed Dangerous and You Are Not Alone at Soul Trains 25th Anniversary show where they were inducted in to the Soul Train Hall of Fame. In October, Michael appeared on the popular Italian TV show, Witten Das, to perform Earth Song and Dangerous. The show was viewed by 21 million people, breaking Italian viewing records.

On November 27, History is third single, Earth Song, was released worldwide, but not in the US. The short film for the song was directed by Nicholas Brandt and was filmed in countries. The single went to number one in the United Kingdom and stayed at the top spot for three weeks. The song also reached the top ten in 16 different countries and sold three.5 million copies worldwide. The short film was also nominated for a Grammy Award.

Before the years finish, Michael successfully merged his ATV music publishing company with Sony, generating Sony/ATV Music Publishing. The company contains over 400,000 songs and became the second largest music publishing company in the world.

While rehearsing for the special One Night Only, on December 6th 1995, Michael collapsed and was rushed to hospital suffering dehydration, low blood pressure as well as a viral infection. They spent several days in hospital. The special was finally called off due to HBO management changes and insurance reasons.

Beginning the new Period off, in 1990, Michael was honoured with lots of awards, including several â Entertainer of the Decadeâ awards from Soul Train, MTV & Sony. They was honoured at the White House by President George Bush, who introduced him with a special a Entertainer of the Decade Awardâ. They also received the American Cinema Award for â Entertainer of the Decadeâ introduced to him by Elizabeth Taylor.

Michael started recording the new album on June 25, 1990. In the work of the year, Michael lent his voice to an episode of the Simpsons, called "Stark Raving Dad", under the pseudonym "John Jay Smith". The use of Michael's voice in the episode was not confirmed until lots of years later. They also wrote a song for the Simpsons, called "Do The Bartman", with Bryan Loren, which was released as a single in early 1991.

Michael Jackson originally planned to release a compilation album of earlier hits along with four new songs to be called â Decadeâ in 1990. However, Michael had written & recorded several songs & had lots of material to release an album of all new songs. In March of 1991, Michael renegotiated his contract with Sony, which included a 15 year 6 album deal. The royalty rates included were the largest for any artist at 25% of the retail cost of every album sold. The deal also included Michaelâ��s own record label. The deal landed Michael Jackson in the Guinness World Records again, for the Largest Entertainment Contract Ever, worth $890 million.

In September, Michael was honoured by MTV when they renamed the â Video Vanguard Awardâ to â Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Awardâ.

On November 14, 1991, Michael released the first single & short film from the Dangerous album, called â Black or Whiteâ. For the 11 minute short film, Michael again asked John Landis to direct. The film also starred Macaulay Culkin, Peggy Lipton & George Wendt. The film cost an estimated $4 million to generate & included wonderful dancing & special effects. The â Black or Whiteâ short film was of the earliest films to employ the method of morphing to change face to another at the finish of the clip.The debut of the short film was shown in 27 countries simultaneously & viewed by about 500 million people; the largest audience to ever view a music video.

The short film created controversy due to the last minutes, where Michael dances a Capella in the streets of L.A. Some audiences & critics saw the dance as violent & not suitable for relatives viewing. The day after its release, Michael cut the last minutes from the film & issued an apologetic statement. To date, the video is often shown with the final segment cut & is thought about of the most controversial music videos of all time. Controversy aside, â Black of Whiteâ went to number in 13 countries; staying at the top spot in the US for 7 weeks & Australia for 8 weeks.

The Bad Era years, 1986-1989, would confirm Michael Jackson’s super-stardom and popularity and prove him to be the entertainer of the 1980’s.

Starting a new and exciting era, Michael Jackson broke another world record in 1986. In February, Pepsi-Cola Corporation signed a 3 year deal with Michael Jackson for a whopping $15 million. The endorsement deal would include two Pepsi commercials and the sponsorship of Michael’s first solo tour. It was the largest endorsement deal of its kind in history.

Michael Jackson’s first major project for 1986 would be a 3D movie called “Captain Eo”, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by George Lucas. Michael wrote and recorded two songs for the 17 minute epic; “We Are Here to Change the World” and “Another Part of Me”.

In the movie, Michael plays Captain Eo; a young man on a quest to transform a miserable planet and its evil Supreme Ruler (played by Angelica Huston) into a peace loving nation through the power of song and dance. The movie took almost a year to produce and estimated costs were between $17- $30 million, making it the most expensive movie ever made, minute for minute.

“Captain Eo” was released at Disneyland in California and the Epcot Center in Florida on September 12 September 1986. Michael also helped create a “Captain Eo” ride for Disneyland. The movie was extremely successful and ran for 8 years at Disneyland and 10 years at Epcot. It was also released at Tokyo Disneyland where it ran for 9 years and Disneyland Park in Paris where it ran for 6 years.

Michael began recording demos for the follow up to the Thriller album just after the end of the Victory Tour in 1984. Michael took on a massive task of writing over 60 numbers for the new album and recording approximately 30. The recording of the Bad album took place between January 5 - July 9, 1987 (except for “Another Part of Me” which was recorded for “Captain Eo” in 1986).

Once again, Michael teamed up with Quincy Jones as producer. Michael wrote nine of the eleven tracks himself; “Bad”, “The Way You Make Me Feel”, “Speed Demon”, “Liberian Girl”, “Another Part of Me”, “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, “Dirty Diana”, “Smooth Criminal” and “Leave Me Alone”.

Contributions from other songwriters and musicians were “Just Good Friends”, (written by Terry Buttan and Graham Lyle) which was sung as a duet with Stevie Wonder, and “Man In The Mirror” (Written by Siedah Garrett and Glen Ballard), which was recorded with The Andre Crouch Choir. Steve Stevens contributed a killer guitar solo for the rock-infused “Dirty Diana”.

The first single from the Bad album was a duet with Siedah Garrett called “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, released on July 27, 1987. It travelled to number 1 on the US, UK and other European charts. The song became the highest debuting single of 1987.

The highly anticipated Bad album was released worldwide on August 31, 1987. Bad sold 500,000 copies within five days in the UK; a first for any artist in the UK. It debuted at number one in both the US and UK and many other countries around the world.

The album’s title track “Bad” was released on 31st August 1987 (the same day as the Bad album) with an amazing 18 minute long short film, directed by Martin Scorsese. The film was shot on location in New York and starred Wesley Snipes. It reportedly took six weeks to make with an estimated budget of $2 million. The reaction to the short film and single was massive: it shot to number 1 in the U.S. and many other countries around the world.

The Thriller years, 1982- 1984, would see Michael Jackson reach worldwide super stardom. Michael dominated the world of music, setting new standards and producing the biggest selling album of all time."

In June 1982, Michael Jackson started recording the ET Storybook. Quincy Jones would produce it; based on Steven Spielberg’s movie ET: The Extra Terrestrial. In addition to narrating, Michael would also record a single called “Someone in the Dark” to accompany the story. The book would be an instant hit when released in November 1982, and would also win Michael a Grammy Award in 1984 for “Best Album for Children”.

Around the same time, Michael wrote and produced a song for Diana Ross called “Muscles”. It became a top ten hit for Diana and was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Prior to beginning work on the Thriller album, Michael Jackson teamed up with Paul McCartney to collaborate on 3 songs- “The Man”, “Say, Say, Say” and “The Girl Is Mine”. “Say, Say, Say” was included on Paul’s 1983 album Pipes of Peace and became a number one single in the U.S. “The Girl is Mine” was released as a single in August 1982 and was included on Michael’s Thriller album.

Michael started recording the Thriller album in April 1982. Originally to be called Starlight, the album included 4 original songs by Michael, (“Billie Jean”, “Beat It” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”, “The Girl Is Mine”), 3 songs by Rod Temperton (“Thriller”, “Baby Be Mine” and “The Lady In My Life”), a ballad by Toto (‘Human Nature”), and an infectious pop tune by James Ingram and Quincy Jones (“P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing)”). Amongst the brilliant songwriters Michael collaborated with, he also teamed up with Eddie Van Halen for a guitar solo on “Beat it”, Vincent Price for a rap on “Thriller” and his sisters, LaToya and Janet Jackson for additional vocals on “P.Y.T”.

Pressure mounted as the deadline for the finish of the Thriller album approached and initially the mixes of the songs were rushed and not good enough to be released. The deadline was extended and the mixes perfected. The highly anticipated Thriller was finally released on November 30th 1982.

Michael Jackson Off the Wall Era

The Off The Wall years; 1978-1981, would see Michael Jackson grow up musically. He starred in his first major motion picture and he would set the first of many world records with his first solo album for Epic records.

In October 1978, Michael’s first motion picture was released, called “The Wiz”. The Wiz was a Motown and Universal motion picture soul adaptation of the book “The Wizard of Oz”. Michael auditioned for and gained the role of the scarecrow in the film and moved to New York with his sister LaToya in October 1977 for filming. Michael’s good friend Diana Ross starred as Dorothy in the film.

The Wiz cost approximately $24 million to make and was directed by Sidney Lumet. It featured hundreds of dancers, spectacular costumes, elaborate makeup and special effects. It was one of the most expensive films ever made and took over a year in production. Michael’s makeup for the scarecrow took five hours to apply each day.

When the film was released, it was unfortunately a box office failure. However, Michael’s performance in the film was critically praised and the film received four Academy Award nominations, including: Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Original Music Score and Best Cinematography. The film was released on home video in 1980 and today it has a large cult following.

Michael sang in 6 of the movie soundtrack’s songs, including “You Can’t Win” and “Ease on Down the Road”, both of which were released as singles in 1979. “You Can’t Win” was Michael’s first solo single for Epic records and it remained in the charts in the US for three weeks. The Soundtrack for The Wiz would mark the first time Michael would work with producer Quincy Jones.

Michael had mentioned to Quincy Jones while they were on the set of The Wiz that he was looking for a producer for his next solo album. Quincy recommended himself and quickly signed on to produce Michael’s first solo album in four years, to be called “Off The Wall”.
Michael and Quincy went into the studio in December 1978 and chose between hundreds of songs for the album. They collaborated with several musicians and writers who would become long time colleagues of Michael’s.
On July 28th 1979, Michael released the first single from the forthcoming album; “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough”. The song was solely written by Michael and featured a spoken intro, a surprising falsetto voice and amazing percussion by Michael and his brother Randy. The song was released with a bright music video that featured Michael dancing in triplicate in the song’s bridge. It was his first “short film” and it was directed by Nick Saxon. The song went to number 1 in the US and Australia and was a top 10 hit in 6 countries.

On August 10th, Michael released the album Off The Wall. It was his fifth overall solo album, but his first ever for Epic records. The album was recorded between December 4 1978 and July 7, 1979. Michael contributed three songs to Off The Wall: “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough”, “Working Day and Night” and “Get on the Floor” (co-written with Louis Johnson). Michael and Quincy sought top writers and musicians for the album, with Rod Temperton who contributed three tracks:

“Rock With You”, “Off The Wall” and “Burn This Disco Out”, Paul McCartney contributed the playful “Girlfriend”, Tom Bahler gave the emotional “She’s Out of My Life” and Stevie Wonder and Susaye Greene offered the quirky “I Can’t Help It”. There was one duet between Michael and Patti Austin called “It’s the Falling in Love”, which was written by Carole Bayer Sager and David Foster.

The Jacksons years, 1975-1978, would see Michael and his brothers leave Motown and start writing and producing their own music. Before the decade was over, they recorded 3 albums for Epic records and embarked on a worldwide tour.

In July 1975, the Jackson family held a press conference in New York to announce they had signed with CBS/Epic Records and would be leaving Motown records at the expiration of their contract in 1976. The Jackson Five had begun to ask to produce, write and record their own material as far back as 1974, but all their requests for creative control had been denied. They also felt that the promotion of their records was poor. Michael Jackson had a private meeting with Berry Gordy in May 1975 to discuss the Jackson Five’s future and after being denied creative freedom once again, the brothers started shopping for a new record deal.

CBS/Epic Records were interested in the brothers and offered them a major deal. The Jacksons received a signing bonus, and a massive royalty rate that was ten times more than what they received at Motown. They would also have some creative freedom including a choice of songs and being able to write two songs per album. Jermaine did not sign with CBS; instead he stayed with Motown. Randy was signed on to replace Jermaine. They were also not permitted to take the name “The Jackson Five” with them, as Motown had trademarked the name when they signed back in 1968.

As the Jackson Five, the brothers were still signed to Motown for eight more months. They would not record for Motown again, so to fill in the time the Jacksons signed on to host a summer variety program with CBS-TV, which would star many other members of the Jackson family. “The Jacksons TV Show” first aired on 16th of June 1976. Each show was 30 minutes long and featured different celebrity guests, singing, dancing and comedy sketches. It was the first time an African American family had starred in a television series. The first season ran for four weeks and the ratings were so good that they were signed on for a second and third season. The last show was broadcast on March 9, 1977.

The Jackson 5 Era

The Jackson 5 Era, 1963-1975, would see young Michael burst onto the music scene with his brothers, The Jackson 5. Michael would also cut his first solo record at the tender age of 13 and establish himself as an accomplished and polished performer. These years were a whirlwind of performances, recording, television appearances, interviews and constant touring.

Michael Jackson’s biggest dream as a child was to become a singer. His brothers, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon had already formed a small musical group and had been practising around the house. Young Michael wanted to join the group, but was thought to be too young. In 1963, Michael, at the age of only five, performed an amazing rendition of “Climb Every Mountain” for his class at Garnett Elementary School in Gary, Indiana. His performance moved many teachers to tears and he received a standing ovation. Immediately after his stunning performance, little Michael was invited into the Jackson brother’s group as their lead singer. A lady from their neighborhood would suggest calling the group “The Jackson 5”.

Joseph Jackson, the boys’ father, took on the role of manager for The Jackson 5 and began to rehearse them before and after they went to school. He helped polish and mould the group by adding the latest songs to their repertoire and checking out what the top musicians were doing. Michael would also study the greats on television- such as James Brown and Jackie Wilson to learn the newest dance steps in order to add them to The Jackson 5’s routines.

The Jackson 5 won their first talent contest at Gary’s Roosevelt High School with a rendition of “My Girl”. Michael says that after that, they won every talent contest they entered in Gary. Joseph started to invest more money in the group by buying new musical equipment for the boys- microphones, amplifiers and guitars.

The Jackson Five started gaining a reputation for being great performers in their hometown and they got their first paid gig at a nightclub called Mr Lucky’s. They also performed at other nightclubs in Gary, earning their payment when coins and notes were thrown onto the stage after each performance. The boys were joined by two neighbourhood friends- Johnny Jackson on drums and Ronny Rancifer on keyboards.

Soon, The Jackson 5 were on the Chitlin’ circuit, which took them to Chicago, where they won amateur night at the Regal Theatre three weeks in a row. Here, they opened for acts such as The Temptations, The Emotions, Jackie Wilson and the O’Jays.

He's actually been in the studio (with the help of his sons, Taj, Taryll and T.J. of former boy band 3T) recording his first solo effort, So Far So Good, which just launched with the first single, "We Made It."

Now, he explains only to UsMagazine.com why he decided to wait, along with a quick update on how brother Michael Jackson's kids are holding up since his 2009 death.

UsMagazine.com: What inspired you to branch into a solo career?

Tito Jackson: I actually started a solo career back in the days of Motown, but it so happened that the brothers left the company at the time that I was in the middle of my project, so it was never released. I had three sons, so I had to stop and raise my boys. I just put my project on the back burner for a little while, or a long while I should say. I worked for my kids, raised my sons. But since everyone in my family has a solo career, I thought it was time for me to do something.

Us: How is this album different from what you produced with the Jackson Five? And what sets it apart from the work of your siblings?

TJ: I think what sets it apart is that it's just me expressing my musical abilities, and what I feel and think musically. Instead of having four or five other brothers with their input, I'm able to totally express myself.

Us: Was it ever difficult to get the five of you to agree on the music you all produced?

TJ: Well, it's a musical thing. It almost speaks for itself, especially when you're speaking about musical disagreement. The music will speak for itself.

Us: Awesome. Are your sons on the album at all?

TJ: My sons have a huge involvement in the album. They helped produce and write some of the songs and sang in the background with me. They kept me really focused on the project. After my brother passed away, it was very difficult to get back into a musical groove. I had to take time to just mourn for a moment. I felt Michael wanted me to continue my music. He had heard the title track, and he liked it and praised it very much. I started back on it about four months ago, and now I'm going to complete it and get it out.

April 7, London (IANS) The lawyers of Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's doctor, had said revealed that the late King of Pop might have been committed suicide over his financial despairs.

Defense lawyer of Conrad Ed Chernoff said that his client, who is charged with involuntary murder, was not responsible for the pop superstar's death in 2009.

He claimed that he was so upset about the state of his finances he took his own life, reports contactmusic.com.

'The root of the defense is going to be that Michael Jackson occupied in a desperate act and took desperate measures that caused his death. We believe at the time Michael Jackson died he was a desperate man in relation to his financial relationships,' Chernoff told that Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor.

However, Deputy District Attorney David Walgreen has resisted the claims, saying the defense is simply staging 'an irrelevant sideshow' aimed at distracting the jury from the key subject of the trial.
